Staining a Wood Fence
By Garden Girl of Florida
O.k., here's what we did when we wanted to stain our board on board, 6ft privacy fence 2yrs ago:

First of all, we used an Olympic oil stain (bought it at Sears) for our fence for a few reasons. One, it was rated one of the best stains in Consumer Reports. Two, for our climate (hot Florida), stain was a better option as latex would tend to chip or peel from the elements after time. Three, stain makes the wood appear more natural than latex. A latex painted fence looks like a latex painted fence. Our fence looked beautifully natural after it was done.

We had about 200ft of fence to stain (both sides) and it took about 12 gallons of stain with an air brush. If your fence is brand new and pressure treated, you must let the wood "dry" for about 6mths before you paint or stain (you may need to check the drying time in your area). If your fence is old, you will need to clean and/or prime it before you paint or stain. Our fence was pressure treated pine (very light colored wood) and when it was done, it looked like beautiful cedar:

Our fence is two years old and still looks brand new after two years of beating hot Florida sun. The Olympic stain is guaranteed to look like this for 10-15 years (too bad we sold our house last year!). Usually after 6mths here, the new pine fences look grey and weathered if not treated. Latex may be a better option where you are and I agree that it is better for the environment. Hope this helps...just do some research as it will prevent you from restaining/painting your fence in five years compared to 10-15 years.
